Matheus Cunha had a hand in both goals as Wolves got their first win of the season. Look back on the action with the best facts and Opta data in our Wolves vs Southampton stats page.
Wolves secured their first win of the Premier League season thanks to Matheus Cunha’s heroics in a 2-0 defeat of Southampton at Molineux on Saturday.
The pressure had been increasing on Wolves boss Gary O’Neil ahead of the visit of fellow strugglers Saints, but victory will come as a massive boost for a team who’d underachieved across their first 10 games of 2024-25.
Wolves went ahead after one minute and 48 seconds, their earliest goal in Premier League history. Cunha slide an incisive pass through to Pablo Sarabia, who took the ball around the goalkeeper and slotted home.
A Ryan Manning equaliser was subsequently disallowed controversially and Wolves took full advantage early in the second half, slamming home from distance against a helpless Aaron Ramsdale.
Wolves had little issue holding onto their lead despite Southampton dominating possession, ending the game having had 71% of the ball but without managing a shot on target.
As such, Saints slumped to a ninth successive Premier League away defeat, with no team having a poorer run on the road in the competition since Aston Villa lost 10 on the bounce between February 2016 and September 2019.
The defeat leaves Southampton bottom of the table, a position vacated by victorious Wolves.
